Fair Trade and the Maguey Exchange Impact

Blog

October marks Fair Trade Month, a time when companies around the globe highlight the importance of fair wages, sustainable farming practices, and ethical treatment of workers in various industries. From the tequila farms of Jalisco to the mezcaleros in Oaxaca, here at Maguey Exchange we advocate for transparency and sustainability in artisanal spirits, this month and always.

Fair Trade and the Maguey Exchange Impact

Imagine a world where, armed with technology, the scales of control tip back to the roots. A realm where remote and marginalized communities aren't just coordinates on a map but vital nodes in a vibrant network. Imagine what could be possible if they had the data and the knowledge. We have, and we’re doing our part to make it happen.

Empowering Agave Farmers and Spirits Producers

Fair trade practices empower agave farmers by ensuring they receive fair prices for their products. This allows them to reinvest in their farms, improve infrastructure, and adopt sustainable farming techniques. With unprecedented production and industry metrics, MGx technology enables information sharing which gives smaller farmers and producers bargaining power in an increasingly competitive market.

Ensuring Fair Wages and Working Conditions

One of the cornerstones of Fair Trade Month is the importance of providing fair wages and decent working conditions for workers at the center of the supply chain. This includes reasonable working hours, safe environments, and access to essential services like healthcare and education. As a core pillar of our company, MGx provides a platform for experts, advisors, and producers who can speak directly to workers’ experiences and help put faces behind each bottle that is distributed and consumed.

Promoting Sustainable Farming

The agave plant, the foundation of the agave spirits industry, takes several years to mature, making it vital to implement sustainable farming practices. The tales of over-harvested agave fields aren't just tales— they are a stark reality reflecting the devastation of the environment we live in. Many brands chant the mantra of sustainability and eco-consciousness, but are they truly walking the talk, or are they just surfing the “green” wave for brownie points?

MGx isn’t just a company of mantras—it's a movement. We’re proud to partner with producers and brands committed to using eco-friendly methods that preserve the environment and ensure the longevity of the natural resources tied to production and consumption of the spirit. Aligning with the UN's Development Goals, we aim to pull back the curtains and expose these gray areas, compelling businesses to go beyond empty claims and make measurable strides towards genuine environmental protection.

On Baiju and the Warning for Agave Spirits

The legacy of Baijiu in China serves as a powerful cautionary tale. Historically cherished and produced by countless artisanal distilleries, each with its own distinct processes and flavors, Baijiu saw a decline in its rich tapestry of diversity due to unchecked commercialization. Industrialization favored mass production and the unique voices of smaller producers were drowned in the din of commercial gain. As a result, while Baijiu itself survived, many of its traditional variations faded into oblivion.

Sound familiar? This very fate threatens other artisanal spirits, like mezcal, if left unchecked.

However, at Maguey Exchange, we're staunchly committed to preventing such a narrative. Our mission is to safeguard the narratives and legacies of spirits against the sweeping waves of the market.

Countless small-scale agave spirit producers are true artisans, their techniques polished over generations. Through fair trade practices, we recognize, value, and champion this expertise, ensuring the preservation and celebration of these time-honored methods. With connections to over 100 producers across Mexico, Maguey Exchange works hand-in-hand with these craftsmen, vowing that their masterpieces will continue to be celebrated by aficionados worldwide, in all their authentic glory.

Let us learn from the past, ensuring the vibrant stories of our spirits don't fade away, but continue to shine, sip by sip.

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about how Maguey Exchange is working to ensure ethical trade practices within the agave spirits industry. From the technology we offer to the organizations we collaborate with, we’re excited and humbled to play a role in ensuring the well-being of agave farmers and workers, as well as shaping the future of this industry.

First up is our educational video series in collaboration with Park Street University. In the first installment we dissect the foundation of the global agave spirits supply chain and reveal how regional and varietal factors drive the unique profiles of these spirits. Check out the video here.
